Minutes of the P.B.A.M (Pooh Awareness Week) Poohsticks gathering of the Pembroke College Winnie-the-Pooh Society.
Held on a bridge over the Cam on 26th February 1998
Present: Alison, Stephen, Rob, Ben, Anfony, Tony, and possible convert, Tim.
- We are pleased to notice the appearance of a newcomer, Tim, who has been swayed by the brilliant promotional literature and wishes to find out more about the Way of Pooh. Buoyed by our success, we try to get some American tourists to play, but they only have a few hours in Cambridge and think there are better things to do than playing Poohsticks. More fool them.
- Tim Hardingham, computer officer of Pembroke College, also refuses to play. However, we hand him some promotional literature, and he promises to consider what Pooh could mean to his life.
- Ben claims that “Everyone’s got much bigger ones than me.” I was obviously talking about Poohsticks, but people have such dirty minds.
- Stephen proceeds to win the warm up game.
- Whilst we play, Anfony is deducted points several times because of throwing various things at ducks. We do not condone these activities, and censure him accordingly. F:3 A:3 Abs :0. Tim, our guest, decides that he should be censured, and so he duly is.
- Ben is also told off at some point for using a plastic coffee spoon as a demonstration Poohstick. On the basis that the ducks might eat it, Ben is unanimously censured, but escapes docking of points.
- John, a random businessman, tries to cross the bridge, but can’t resist a game. He scores a very credible fifth place, before having to go and do whatever he had to do that afternoon.
- Towards the end of the game, two Japanese tourists, Sachiko and Nami come and try to cross the bridge. They’re not sure quite what is going on, but join in enthusiastically. A bit like World War 2, really. For a first attempt, they do very well, and Naomi even comes third in a game.
- Awarding 5 points for a win, three for a second place, and only one for third place, the results after 8 long rounds are:
1st: Stephen, 22 points (wow!)
2nd:Alison, 17
3rd: Tim, 9
4th:Anfony, 6 (although four points were deducted)
5th: Tony, 5
Joint 6th: Ben and Rob, 4
8th: Nami, 1
Did not score: John, Sachiko.
- The first 8 were therefore selected for the Varsity Poohsticks match, although we might have to find a substitute as Nami’s not actually a University member. And we probably need a cox as well.
- The meeting is closed. F:4 A:2 Abs:0
