Minutes of the E.G.M. of the Pembroke College Winnie The Pooh Society
held mostly in Room 20 at 2 Selwyn Gardens, at 4pm on Sunday 26th October
Present were: Ben, James, Tony, Alison, Peach
Apologies from: Rob, Vicky, Jenny
- The meeting is opened somewhere near Sidgewick Avenue. Ben proposes a
vote that Peach and Tony be allowed to vote for the duration of the
meeting. For 2, Against 0, Abstentions 1.
- Ben proposes a vote that the others be censured for their lack of
attendance. For 4, Against 0, Abstentions 1.
- Now in Sidgewick Avenue, James introduces Peach to Alison.
- James proposes a vote to censure Ben for not doing something in the
computer room. For 3, Against 0, Abstentions 1.
- Ben observes that they are all going to die ( a car was approaching).
- Ben proposes a vote to delay reading the minutes. For 4, Against 0,
Abstentions 1.
- General gossip follows regarding Rob and Annalise. Can you imagine
Rob trying it on?
- Ben points out that he nearly forgot us.
- The group sees 2 Selwyn Gardens. On arrival, they do apparently have
trouble entering.
- James has forgotten the Koalas.
- Jenny arrives. Then, Andrew, Sandy, Rachel, Jeremy and Stephen all
arrive at once.
- More introductions follow. James reads the minutes with some difficulty.
- The cake is handed round, a piece for each inhabitant of Room 20.
- Prospective secretaries are to submit a nomination and a seconder to
a member of the committee.
- Ben has taken œ2 from someone on behalf of the president.
- Vote to censure Jon (a) for being absent from the meeting and (b)
just for the hell of it. For 4, Against 0, Abstentions 5.
- Who wants to be secretary, a discussion follows.
- We look at the constitution to investigate the duties of various
committee members.
- Anthony arrives!
- It is said that there is a cornucopia of cake.
- Anthony has mysteriously "found" some of Sibylle's chocolate.
- Vote to censure Anthony for embezzling chocolate. For 10, Against 0,
Abstentions 5.
- According to James' mother, his name is Broccoli.
- Oh look! Anthony's gone red. James has gone red too... must be the tea.
- Anthony resigns from the position of Poohsticks captain. He will be
sadly missed.
- His resignation speech consists of the following: "Bye". The entire
speech is done sitting down, but we are supposed to believe that he is
standing up.
- We also get a special picture of Carlos.
- Ben reads out more letters, even ones that have been read out before.
How interesting. Note Poohsticks is not spelt with a hyphen. "Eyeore" is
also incorrectly spelt: what is the world coming to?
- The foreign/under secretaries resign with speeches. Now there's only
one member of the committee present.
- There follows numerous proposals for committee posts.
- Foreign secretary proposals are the first to come flooding in.
- Tony husts first. "New Foreign Sec - New Tony" . Despite being a
fresher, he is said to liase well with other people. As for the Sheila
and her Dog Society (spit, spit) "we will make them see the light". Tony
would organise lots of formal halls of war so as to beat them in
discussion. Alison husts next. Apparently, she'd be good on the
committee as a female member, which is indeed true. Alison believes the
Foreign Sec should have a strange "foreign" accent so as to follow on
from Granny. She thinks the Sheila and her Dog Society (spit, spit) war
should continue as it always has done, with numerous formal halls of war.
She hates them (who doesn't?) and can understand hatred, as can Professor
Heinz-Wolf. Finally Anthony husts, saying he can't compete in length
with the previous hustings. However he can speak one language, which is
good for a Foreign Secretary. Anthony says that he likes foreigners so
he'd be great for the job. As for the Sheila and her Dog Society (spit,
spit) he would continue the war, possibly making some use of Varsity.
Maybe we should challenge them to a game of Poohsticks. On the other
hand, maybe we should just "slap `em". Alison is duly elected to the
post of Foreign secretary by means of a secret ballot.
- Undersecretary nominations then proceed to pile in.
- First granny husts. It worked last time when Ben did it while Granny
was trainspotting, therefore Ben husts for Granny again. In a Hull
accent, it is pointed out that because he's been Foreign Secretary before
Granny should now become undersecretary. Granny's main interest is in
maintaining communications with certain female members of the Society.
However, there's a Class 359 coming in so the husting ends.
- Later it transpires that it must be a Class 150, 153, 158, 317 or
365 if it's in Cambridge.
- Tony husts but in a very bad Hull accent. He reckons that the
undersecretary is very important and says "I'd help lots".
- Skipping takes place. We decide to keep them skipping a bit longer
than is usual.
- Granny is duly elected to the post of Under Secretary.
- Jenny reads a poem called "A Thought". Jenny reads another called
"Buttercup Days". Ben comes in and orders the others in too because he's
noticed that we've been reading poems while they've been skipping.
- Ben proposes a vote to censure us for reading poems while they skip.
For 4, Against 5, Abstentions 1. Defeated!
- Stephen now husts for the post of Secretary. Everyone is encouraged
to vote for Stephen, if only because he exists. Stephen is voted in and
is permitted to re-enter the room as he's not wearing his jumper and so
might get cold outside.
- Ben proposes Tony for captain of Poohsticks. For 6, Against 3,
Abstentions 1.
- A couple of poems are read for some reason.
- It is decided that next week's meeting is to be in Stephen's room at
26 Barton Road even though he will be in Yorkshire. Much later it is
decided that 40 Panton Street is a better idea.
- Granny does all the washing up. He'll be doing a lot of this in the
next year.
- Everyone has a drink of water.
- The meeting is to be closed: vote For 5, Against 3, Abstentions 2.
